I apologize for not commenting sooner, but for some reason every time I tried to post, it kept kicking me back even though I entered the info the way it asked me to. Maybe my browser was messed up. Anyway, thanks again to Liane and the Novel Spaces gang for inviting back to their sandbox to play for a bit. :)Dayton Wardhttp://daytonward.livejournal.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-3668906328538165412011-06-16T16:59:16.407-04:002011-06-16T16:59:16.407-04:00:::raising hand:::

Often times other people have to tell me about them, or that stupid Google Alerts does (yes, I know that I can turn off Google Alerts). For the most part, even the negative ones aren't all that bad, but I've had a few stingers. I grumble for a minute then move on.

Great post!Farrah Rochonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13734081434172632431noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-38708626133480358572011-06-15T18:34:10.036-04:002011-06-15T18:34:10.036-04:00Welcome back, Dayton!

I would never dream of engaging a reviewer, though, especially not in public and not over a negative review. If it's a good one and I know the reviewer I send her/him a private note of thanks.

I read about the recent train wreck you mentioned. Horrific. That author certainly learned the hard way.Liane Spicerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05035607144500219524noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-66957351525227505732011-06-15T11:09:21.339-04:002011-06-15T11:09:21.339-04:00Once in a while, when I am feeling down, I'll ...Once in a while, when I am feeling down, I'll go back and read a good review. the bad ones I try to repress. If it's that one, the sad part was that the reviewer was right -- anybody could tell by reading the writer's comments -- and the writer was clueless.

I've gotten one of those critical reviews, and while part of the review made me go "huh?," the other part made me re-look at the story and fix a couple of things.Lorrainehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01598738332758224442noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-91152191853162559372011-06-15T00:20:17.455-04:002011-06-15T00:20:17.455-04:00I'm just never going to live that fight with t...I'm just never going to live that fight with the review blogger down, am I?

Or. Wait... Are you talking about somebody else?

Good to see you back, Dayton, and good topic. Personally, I've memorized both of my reviews; considered setting the one I like to music. More seriously, when I was first published I spent way more time than I'd like to admit scouring the internet for any mention of my name. Reviews can be a tar baby for any writer.
But worse than any time sink is the danger that you might start writing for the reviews, letting what some blogger with no known credentials said influence your choices. (Which is pretty much how my writing style developed.) We can't not look at -- and look for -- reviews. We just need to keep them in perspective.

Which, now that I think of it, is pretty much what you just said.KeVin K.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14792797517571690942noreply@blogger.com
