As an adult, it bothered me quite a bit, since it seemed that the publishing world than (as now to a certain degree) pushed out books with agendas since books with agendas ((in non-fiction especially) sold better than books w/o.

When I do read, I do have a tendency to stay away from books that have agendas (blatant or otherwise) that run counter to common sense/my personal viewpoints.G.B. Tha...Linda, good for you to keep editing your work. That polish brings satisfaction to the author and clarity to the reader. When editing other people's writing (novels/plays/poems) I sense the writer's haste to get the idea down before it flies away. All we writers seem to suffer that tendency in honor of the Muse. However, that process only launches the real writing craft which seems more elusive than I once thought. If I summarize my editing philosophy, it would read like this: Remember that writing is “sentence-driven.” That’s why I scrutinize construction so that it says to the reader what the writer actually means/intends. When editing someone's work, I try to follow the vision in the writer's head and then check to see whether that vision has flowed onto paper, flowed accurately/progressively toward a "logical" ending to each sentence, paragraph, and chapter. If I cannot clearly perceive that logic from the author's pen, I usually need to smooth out the word order in a specific sentence or the sentence order in a specific paragraph. As ideas rush into a writer's mind, they often present in a highly-personal but jumbled fashion. So, when I don the editor hat, I do not presume over a writer's words but only seek to rearrange them. I have a caveat to that policy. I do change words when a word choice needs correction or refinement) :-)beth@imapurple.nethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08104825885532314833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-1900422441799275672019-02-09T15:12:38.336-05:002019-02-09T15:12:38.336-05:00G.B. However,I liked your post and wanted to share with you an idea from a friend of mine. Years ago, she gave herself 1,000 miles for Christmas which worked out to about 3 miles per day. I thought it a quite clever idea. A successful novelist friend said, "Start the day with an hour of walking, and then write for 5 hours." Having worked for Neiman Marcus in advertising for 30 years, she polished as she went along. The St. Martins' Press editor found one error which turned out to be a purposeful misspelling. My best to you.beth@imapurple.nethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08104825885532314833noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-861851653632147972018-11-12T10:35:29.731-05:002018-11-12T10:35:29.731-05:00This comment has been removed by the author.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15844897645079800752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5594341074652821017.post-84730062571381023202018-11-09T18:05:52.706-05:002018-11-09T18:05:52.706-05:00You're welcome, Linda! There's never enough posts on the subject. Yes, find a critique group or beta reader that is truly honest with their criticism (or approval). I sent my sister every piece of my first book as I wrote it. She always told me it sounded as good as the books she reads by famous authors. As far as the publisher for African American romance, I wonder if you had asked them specifically if they'd accept an interracial couple, if they would have said yes. It may be just how they wrote the submission requirements, but didn't really mean that "both" needed to be African American. I'd be interested in how they'd answer that question.
